Matthew 9:35-38

35 And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38 therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest."

  1. Jesus taught, proclaimed the gospel, and healed. Could he have left any of those three activities out? Were all three necessary? Explain.

  2. What do you think “harassed and helpless” looked like to Jesus? Describe the condition of sheep who have no shepherd?

  3. What does Jesus see as the proper response to not enough workers?

  4. Who is qualified to be a worker in the harvest?

  5. Does this passage set any expectations for whether you should expect any positive results when you are involved in the harvest? Explain.
