+ Read Scripture

Matthew 11:1-6

1 When Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in their cities. 2 Now when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent word by his disciples 3 and said to him, "Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?" 4 And Jesus answered them, "Go and tell John what you hear and see: 5 the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them. 6 And blessed is the one who is not offended by me."

Talk Sheet Questions

  1. Do you think John’s questions were prompted by doubt or that he was second-guessing Jesus? Explain.

  2. If you were in prison as a spokesperson for Jesus (like John), what would you want or need to ask him or to find out so you felt more secure?

  3. How would you counsel someone with a difficult situation like John’s to keep their emotional/spiritual balance?

  4. Do you think Jesus answered the question in the way John’s disciples were expecting? Do you think his answer helped John? Why or why not?

  5. What do you think it means to “not be offended” by Jesus? How do you think it is a road to blessing?
