Matthew 8:18-22

18 Now when Jesus saw a crowd around him, he gave orders to go over to the other side. 19 And a scribe came up and said to him, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go." 20 And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head." 21 Another of the disciples said to him, "Lord, let me first go and bury my father." 22 And Jesus said to him, "Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead."

  1. Is there a relationship between success for Jesus and the crowds that followed him constantly? Explain.

  2. Why do you think Jesus challenged the person who said he would follow him? (19) Why not just be glad to get another follower? How does that challenge you as you follow Jesus?

  3. Why didn’t Jesus seem to like the idea of the disciple taking care of his father’s funeral? How does that inform how you follow Jesus?

  4. See how many excuses can you and your life group can brainstorm for not following Jesus. Is it easy or hard to come up with them?
